But no, Masaomi shakes his head] It's actually a region... You see, the Pokemon's world's a liiittle divided and chaotic. Instead of nations, there's regions where people live in. I know of five: Kanto, Johto - where my comrades are from - Hoenn, Sinnoh, and finally Unova. Unova's very far away from the other four, near as I can tell, because no one has any data from it and the people here who are from Unova don't have pokedexes.

[ Poor Soren indeed ]

Kanto, Johto, Hoenn, Sinnoh, Unova. [ She'll remember the names, with any luck. ]

That's right! And each region has between a hundred and a hundred seventy-five species of pokemon in it... well, originally from it. There's apparently a lot of overlap.

So we have a lot of those entries but not all of them. [ Because of what he said about Unova. ]

That's right! we'll have somewhere around six hundred pokemon! But I've never countered exactly how many.

[Speaking of, the sync is almost done. Finally.]

[ Oh cool look at that little bar go. You can make it, buddy! ]

Say, Ikki, are you going to be willing to hang with me for the next hour and a half doing a lot of the basic training I went through when I first became Linda's Partner? We won't get it all in the first day, of course, but I think it would be good to start now.

[ Soren had been bored of all this pokedex talk and more of Ikki's dried fruit stash is gone. You saw nothing. 8|a Well no you saw stuff she definitely left it open for whoever to eat some.

Ikki nods, finally looking away from the mystery screen. ] Yep, sure! I already did airbending with grandpa and jitte stuff with Smoker. My only other thing is [ ...lunch with Chien. 8|a WELP. ] ...well I don't have anything else for today 'til dinner at home. And I wrote to Katara and grandpa to say where I am an' who I'm with.

Technically, this training is dangerous enough that I think I should call Katara before I, of all people, put you though it.

[He says this... so. So. Sheepishly]

'Kay. [ SHE LOOKS PRETTY UNCONCERNED. Pokemon attacks are, as near as she can tell, special bending things. Her bending form emphasizes avoiding being hit by bending things, or minimizing the damage. ] I'm pretty good at dodging things, if that helps. An' deflecting.

Ikki, I am positive that if we fought you would give me a run for my money, but I also know that if I were to take you into a sim room where you have to fight pokemon without telling you grandmother, she would rip out my heart and feed it to me.

[He even laughs, darkly, at that as he scoots back from the girl and goes to pull out his journal to call Katara]

I don't think she'd feed it to you! [ She's just. laughing. It's probably easier to be entertained here when she's never actually been the target of Katara's protective anger, but rather one of the beneficiaries.

She settles in to fiddle with the pokedex, though, doing the obvious from Masaomi's mini-lecture and pointing it at Soren to see what happens.

Soren has seen what happens before, but obligingly stands still. ]

[With the Sync completed, it now displays the full Data on Soren. all his moves, all the data there, basically. What the moves do. Etc.

And now he goes to call Katara on Voice]

A...haha, Katara, are you there?

[It takes a few minutes, but she sees this.]

Masaomi? Is everything all right?

Is she Soren's new trainer?

Good, you do know! Yes, that's exactly the case. I was just explaining to her what it means and I've been showing her how to work the pokedex and pokeball... but next I was going to introduce her to the basics of battling as Silver showed them to me.

[A beat]

...I figured I should offer for you to be around to see that if you wanted.

[To be honest, he doesn't sound hesitant except for that last part. He sounds excited. Excited to such a grand level that Ikki (the family of Katara) is now his protege in a world he now knows. Even if it's not his own, he's taken it as his own in the last almost-year. He can be someone's mentor]

[An airbender training a Pokemon. This... can't go well.

Let's backtrack a minute before she agrees to anything.]

Masaomi... tell me... how becoming a trainer works, exactly?

Ah... well. To be put simply, the Partner chooses you and you choose if you accept that or not. [In the Pokemon world there's also catching, but in this world and therefore his understanding of it, there's very clearly a "pokemon chooses the trainer" vibe] Or do you mean the committed actions?

No, I mean-- [THIS IS NOW A STANDARD FILTER] -- I know that being a trainer means training a Pokemon to grow stronger and to fight. But airbenders embrace a very distinct philosophy about violence. And Ikki's only seven. If training Soren is too much for her, will Soren get hurt if she can't? Or will he be able to find another trainer?

[A very, very distinct part of of him wants to tell Katara she's underestimating Ikki, but he saw how wonderfully that backfired last time. So he inhales and exhales before he now takes a few more steps away from Ikki. Still within eye sight but hopefully exiting where Ikki can hear him]

In theory, he could find another trainer, yes. In theory, her age and inexperience could result in him being hurt, as well, which is why at least when she's starting out and they're forming their bond - because trust me that's harder than it sounds - I'll be with them every step of the way and I'd like to invite you to be as well.

[Hm.] As for the philosophy of airbenders... I don't think I've ever explained to you why pokemon fight, have I? For pokemon, fighting - battle, that is - is a contest of skill and strength, power and honor. It's born out of a need to become stronger and to achieve the highest level they can reach in personal potential. And frankly, I think that Ikki's compatible with that much, and given she agreed to be his trainer, I think she does too.

[That said, he does seen her concerns. They played out on Ikki's face and also play out in Katara's tone here.]

[Yup. Even your implication goes swimmingly.]

I'm not talking about her age and inexperience, I'm talking about her exposure to violence and to something that she cares about being constantly engaged in fighting. I know that there are benefits as well, and in the end I'm going to support whatever decision she chooses to make, but what I wanted to know was if there was an out for her without hurting anyone in case she wanted to take it.
