No matter how you slice it, Soren will always be a warrior, it's in his soul. But yeah, if she ends up unable or unwilling to do, Gold and I can find another trainer for him, I'm sure. Sorry for missing the point.

[ During that conversation Ikki and Soren progressed from reading the moves to Soren showing off his moves after Ikki reads an entry.

Who knew that the advanced airbending thing was called Air Slash? Ikki did not. The More You Know. Unbothered by the wind this demonstration has kicked up, Ikki taps the next word on the list, fairly confident in this "hit the screen gently until things happen on it" thing they have going on.

Focus Energy says it focuses your energy. Cool?

She glances up from this exciting description as Masaomi comes back. She'd noticed him leaving, but hadn't gone to attempt eavesdropping. ] Sifu, lookit, I can get to the screens 'bout specific ones now. Kinda.

[ button mashing is more luck than skill okay ]

[Sifu.

Sifu.

The word is distantly familiar from Things Aang Says and his time as the Prince of Omashu. Enough that it basically could mean senpai, or even sensei. His eyes widen considerably as she shuts his journal and internalizes that she just called him her mentor. Holy shit. He nods and corrects himself to walk the rest of the distance over to get next to her]

[Holy shit. Okay, smiling, he motions for her to hand him the pokedex. When she does, he holds it in a sort of "both of them are holding it" way.]

Okay, so this is an old school thing. See, you use this [The direction arrow thumb bad. He scrolls through the moves with it] to move around the screen. Then you use this button [the equivalent of the start button] to confirm something... uh, basically to click on it. And then this one [The equivalent of the select button ~~BECAUSE THIS MODEL DOESN'T HAVE A AND B??~~] to go back, see? And when you click on moves. [He clicks on Focus Energy again. And then he scrolls down. There's some more notes/data on it - observations Professors like Oak might have made about the move's limitations and the irl version of PP and other stuff like that] You can get some more information by going down. Not every move has more info, of course, but a lot of them do. You can also add you own notes...

[And he clicks down on the thumb pad until they get to an "ADD NOTE" thing on the screen. He then pushes the start button, and it pulls up the same "thumb pad click and select" typing screen she used earlier for her name ~~it'snot touchpad at all I was forgetting my bad~~ ...But then he shows her something neat.

He flips the dex on its side and shows her a little release switch on the left side near the bottom, and when he does that, a small keyboard slides out of the bottom of the dex. He then types the example sentence "HELLO IKKI" (right there on the notes for Focus Energy, jeez) and smiles at her]

[ The reaction to her terminology sails over Ikki's head completely. She's instead watching with avid interest as Masaomi makes the pokedex do things, keeping quiet as he talks, trying to commit it to memory (narrowly stopping herself from asking what a new school thing would be, but). None of the buttons seem to have special names, at least.

A lot of this seems to be about adding her own notes, and Ikki had sort of been wondering if the whole hunt-and-select thing was how she was supposed to do that - which she wouldn't complain about, exactly, but for anything other than her own four-letter name it might take a while.

Masaomi is rewarded with a gasp when the keyboard slides out, and Ikki reaches over to tug his hand away from the keyboard, examining it. That's so cool. ] It has all the letters!

Yep! A regular keyboard, right there! [He winks and then clicks the back button a few times. First so it gets back to the page on Soren, and then back to the main menu. There's a lot of tabs there you can use the arrow pad to flip through. Some of them are useful (SEARCH, LIST, NOTES, CAUGHT), some of them are less so for Luceti's purposes (TRADE, STORE) and presumably at least six other options. Because, you know, they do so much]

[ Some of those options make no sense to her. ] Is the Trade thing how you gave it all those entries?

...Actually no, that's Sync. It's further down, but they usually just happen automatically. I don't know what it's for.

[He's never used it. Speaking of, he passes hers back to her and goes to mess with his own pokedex. He needs to send her his custom made Unova data]

...There are a lot of choices.

[ There's a split second as she has one of those Jinora would like this moments that happens sometimes for one of her siblings or parents, as she takes the pokedex back and taps the button to scroll further down. ] Have you tried them all?

I've sort of clicked on themall, but I think some of them don't matter in a world which isn't the one it was meant for, you know?

[And now her screen will be briefly hijacked with getting the data Masaomi is sending]

Speaking of, Katara is coming.

Which one do you use most, then? [ DID SHE DO THAT nope it's whatever Masaomi is doing she didn't break it okay. False alarm.

She looks up from the data screen as it does whatever it is currently doing (more entries, apparently. Go little progress bar go). ]

Oh, good! We talked a bit about Soren staying, but I didn't know 'bout the rest then.

I tend to look through the list a lot. That's where thee's a big list of everye pokemon it has data on. I mean, like you saw with Soren, when you're face to face with a pokemon, you can just point it at them and it'll tell you what's what, but it's cool to just look up random things.

Particularly when it comes to picking suitable opponents.

[He glances at Soren now, smirking]

as is a running theme, Ikki misses the byplay, although she notices Soren's reaction with a certain amount of bafflement. ...probably this has something to do with the whole thing where Chien talked about battling Masaomi and winning next time after Tanabata. Hrm. ]

"Suitable opponents"?

Pokemon battle each other. One of the big ways to train is to program some pokemon into the Dome to compete against.

...What Chien did when you battled wasn't normal, though, right? You looked surprised.

[Mmm. He makes a noise of confirmation. The new sync ought to be done. He folds his arms behind his head and looks up at the ceiling]

In combat, it's not that unheard of... But it wasn't a very good pokemon battle in that case. Because in a pokemon battle, you should be focusing on your partner. Moving in tandem with them, maybe giving some assists and directing them to the best paths. Ideally, you'd work together. Chien-kun and I ended up in fight entirely apart from Linda and Soren - our battle.

[He glances down now, first at Soren and then at Ikki]

Does that make sense?

Mm-hmm! [ That's a relief, though. She'd been pretty certain it was out of the ordinary, given her talks with both trainers after the fact, but you never knew. ] It's like probending, right? The white lotus guards listened to the matches. If any of the players did their own thing, they'd lose reaaaaaaaaaaally bad.

[ she'd listened to a match where that had happened to Korra's team for a bit. um. ]

If you were to listen to Silver, that would be why Chien-kun lost. [There's a wry smirk on his lips]

But Ikki, while we wait for Katara, think you could tell me some more about airbenders?

There are two people with that name, right? Jeb mentioned it. I met one and he was pretty interesting, though!

[ She closes the pokedex and puts it away, since it'd be a little rude to keep fiddling with it now that Masaomi is back from his call. ] Sure! What do you wanna know?

[...There is...?]

Whatever you could- ["tell me" would be a bad idea] -tell me about your ideology?

Thaaaaaaaaaat's...a lot. [ give her a minute to figure out where to start. This is stuff that has been taught to her and practiced around her for as long as she can remember. Ikki frowns a little, trying to sort out what might or might not be important, and starts with what seems best to her. ] I don't know what you know about us from grandpa, but it's prob'bly important that we grew up different. [ She's not sure how to explain this, because she's never exactly broached the topic with her grandfather, even, although he's heard stories about her childhood by now. It's just that the differences in her culture and his culture are hard to pinpoint, but they exist. ]

When grandpa was younger, there were four temples. The East and the West Air Temples housed the nuns; the Northern and Southern temples had the monks. Air Temple island does have female and male dormitories, but...see, they didn't have families, then. Not actually. If I had been born then, I wouldn't know daddy or Meelo or Rohan or my aunt and uncle or my grangran, and I probably wouldn't know mommy was my mommy, or that Jinora was my sister. And the Air Temples back then could only be reached by flying, so you had to have a bison or be an airbender, 'cause they didn't have airships back then. The Air Nomads kept themselves...kinda apart, you know? They did travel places, and see other nations, but I think they had a lot less to do with what happened, although I'm pretty sure that was true of all the nations, because they didn't have all the ways to talk to one another and travel that we do now. But anyway, spiritual concerns came first, and it was...different. [ Her family knows there are differences, Ikki is pretty certain, but she's not sure how much they think about it, if at all. ]

We're not seperate now. Air Temple Island is right next to Republic City. We have a seat on the council, and we're...daddy is very very involved in what happens in the world, and eventually we're gonna be, too. Pilgrims come to the island sometimes. The other temples, the ones they restored, can be reached without flying, because most of our people can't airbend. A lot of the air acolytes remember other ways of life, too, because they're people who decided they wanted to follow the air nomad way of life, and so they came from all the other nations. The younger ones were born air nomad, but I know air nomads who were born fire nation or water tribe or earth kingdom. Those things they used to be didn't go away, just kinda...became a part of who they are now?

Some things are the same, but some things can't be, because when they destroyed our culture they kinda did a pretty thorough job. All our scrolls and things - only a few of them are from a long time ago, you know? Most of them came from grandpa, came from what he knew and remembered.

[ That...more or less sums up her disclaimer, Ikki thinks. She sits down again, crossing her legs and leaning forward to prop her elbows on her knees as she keeps talking. She's making an attempt to speak slightly slower than her usual pace, but the results are mixed at best.

And she's going to pause here before she gets into the basic philosophy because apparently in a conversation it is polite to pause once you start drowning someone in words. ] Y'see?

[You know, history is his worst subject.

Cultural destruction never really plays out as keenly in his head as it might in other people's minds, and so he's sort of looking up at the ceiling as she gives her disclaimer. You know, when she puts it like that, the old Air Nomads sounded accidentally pretentious, he decides. As if in the quest for their cultural and spiritual perfection, they decided to distance themselves so much from the common people they reached a point no one could touch. In that moment, while they sure didn't deserve the fate he knows they had, he also decides that he despises them.

Probably because as common men go, he's pretty common.

It also makes something click into place about Aang for him, something which always nagged at him. That kid had come out of an elitist culture like that? Even if he was sweet and even if he was kind, no wonder his ability to internalize perceptions which aren't his own was so bad (he biasedly thought). He's not sure if that endears him more to Aang, or if it frustrates him more about Aang, but it certainly rewrites the story which is being told even now in his heart. It certainly contextualizes things in the same way Katara's stories about her awful childhood did. He feels like he has a greater understanding now.

...Hah.

He nods though, he's following that, but it's in no way what he's asking. Given how much she talks, he suspects that if he lets her just go on without commenting, she will, well, go on. He hopes she can get to the things he's wondering before Katara arrives]

All life is sacred. That's something we learned from when we were really, really little. It's why we don't eat meat, or it's part of why we don't, anyway. Taking a life is... [ Here she pauses, gesturing somewhat randomly, uncertain of how to convey what she'd been told. ] ...it's not something to be done lightly, but I think that's something that most people agree on, orrrrrrr most of the people I've spoken to here, and back home.

You're supposed to do no harm to others, and respect them. We're supposed to respect our teachers, our family, ourselves, and other people. If all life is sacred then all life deserves your respect, even if sometimes someone might not have your liking, 'cause sometimes people are giant jerks. [ oh so spiritual, Ikki. ] And if people have your respect, you have to listen to them. ...Not obey them, I mean, buuuuuuut you can't ignore what other people think and feel, even if you don't agree with their opinions. That wouldn't be flexible, y'know? If you're trying to walk against the wind, you'll have problems, so you have to learn how to walk with it, instead.

...Because of those things, because of a lot of other things, you're supposed to learn how to solve your problems without resorting to violence. Mm, there's no one way to solve any problem is the point, so saying you must do this in this way feels weird, y'know? That is, I'm not saying that it's not right for other people to do any of the things I'm talking about - well, I think generally killing people is really, really not okay, but I know people who have done that to...stop it from happening to other people - because I don't think that's really up to me, it's just that for my people, it's not what we follow or do. Like, Katara and Uncle Sokka and Aunt Toph and everyone eats meat, and that's cool 'cause that's their right way through the wind.

Ummm. I really don't know how to summarize all this. [ she doesn't look upset, just stumped, because she's trying to figure out which parts he's looking for. ]

[And it's about this point when a Katara who is somewhat still mentally linefacing at Masaomi enters the Dome. She calls out once she gets there to see where they are.]
