On his right wrist is still Katara's bracelet. He's also still rocking the Bradstache. BuT more importantly!
...He's here to flirt with girls. He hasn't done it in a while, he's in just the sort of mood where he wants to do it again. So if you're in town and a pretty girl, he's liable to go and flirt with you. If you're a dude, well then you can witness him doing it. React to him, stand there to be reacted to? There's a lot of ways you can roll this]

It'll get better. Not soon, but it will get better. "Suck it up" is something that could be said about it.

Step back. Take a break. [Shikamaru turns his focus back to Masaomi, and watches him carefully.] It probably feels like a kick in the groin for what you have to show for it, but you've done a lot already. It wasn't a waste.

It's true that our positions are usually reversed, [likewise "our" meaning the three of them] but it's not a role you're slotted into, dumbass. Don't you get how far you've come to have tried in the first place?

Friends are like that. Katara is blessed with people who want to help her... they all play their part to varying effectiveness.
I'm not saying every move you made was valuable. It wasn't a glamorous exit [gesturing to Masaomi, 'obviously'], and we don't even know what the end is yet. But you acted as you saw fit, and contributed. If Katara finds some resolution, part of that is thanks to you.
