This post here is for personal conversations which should happen but one or both of us doesn't want to put up a new post/log and thus we will just thread it out here. This can be used to thread with Masaomi anytime and anywhere. This can either be in person (with action), or via the journal's call feature (voice and/or written).

["Friendship doesn't work like that"

Hah. Masaomi shifts, somewhat uncomfortable a moment and then throws the snack bag at his head] Lecture all you want, sensei.

[Flatly:] Maybe later.

[He doesn't catch the bag, just tilts his head out of the way so it doesn't hit. He'll put it away later.]

The other apology for something I did afterwards. After Law dropped you off the other night, I looked at your journal. [...] You'd left it out.

[He doesn't say that as an excuse - it was out, but it wasn't open.

And this isn't a minor thing like ditching him was. Shikamaru watches him carefully now, anticipating a different reaction to that.]

[ Oh.

That's a violation, isn't it? It has to be. His private business. Those conversations. To be fair, he would have talked about most of them to Shikamaru later, but... even so to have it direct like this. His face goes blank because he's not sure how to even feel about this one]

[He normally wouldn't have done it. No one's business is necessarily their own around a ninja, but Masaomi's one of the few people in Luceti who's gained that respect of privacy from Shikamaru.

Except he broke it. On an impulse, and his reasons are flimsy even to him.]

I'd tell you why, but it'd just amount to a lame excuse. [He sighs, and it's not an exaggerated one like usual.] It won't happen again.

No, let's hear it.

[The excuse, that is. He wasn't being sensible that day. He didn't expect a ton of privacy from Shikamaru, who can run informational circles around him. He finds its actually this admission which is eating him the most]

[Shikamaru huffs once, looking unimpressed, not that he thinks he has the right to. But admitting it is actually embarrassing for him for the exact reasons he said: it doesn't excuse it. And more than that, to him it was childish. Not something that fits with the image he's set himself to live up to.

But at the same time, neither is withholding it for petty reasons like that. It's why he spoke up in the first place. So after a moment of making sure Masaomi is serious...]

I wanted to know why you went out. [If you recall, he did say that he didn't look until after Masaomi was already back.] It bothered me.

And what'd you conclude was my reason?

Heh... [There's no humor here.] That's between you and Katara, isn't it?

Maybe. [A beat] I'd like to think it wasn't a waste.

Vague.

[He doesn't immediately grasp how to interpret that, so he just chooses to admit as much.]

Maaah. [He sighs, and leans back a bit. What even does he mean...]

We had a fruit moment.

[That does put things into better perspective... frankly, though, he's surprised he's even being told.]

Didn't end well, huh.

[You left. That's what Katara said.]

I snapped out of it first.

[It didn't. It really, truly, did not.]

That's not the part that bothers you. [Because he can't see how it would be better the other way around.]

Mm.

[A pause, and then a non-sequencer] So in your professional opinion, when you can't trust your own memories, what is the best fail-safe?

[...]

You did say things went okay, right?

[He'll get to that non-sequencer, just give him a sec.]

I did. Come on man.

[Just checking. He recognizes the subject change for what it is, so it's not like he was going to leap on it just like that.]

So fail-safes, huh. [He nods, arms resting on his drawn up knees.] In a place like Luceti, where there's no guarantee they'll be effective, the best option is to have more than one.

Mm. In a computer, you'd back up a hard drive with a second one, or something. A flash drive?

[Dude, my world has maybe like ten computers, hell if I know. But he gets the gist.]

In a way. But you want more than just a copy. It's like looking at a painting. Nine times out of ten, you'll miss most of the details unless they're pointed out to you. If you're caught up in the moment, you're probably not going to pick up on them with a second look, you know?

Even if the back up was alive?

How many people did you talk to, while that whole experiment was going on?

At least six in detail, maybe a half dozen more in passing. [A beat] And either way, I talked to you.

[Exactly. He tilts his head downwards.]

Did you figure out what was really happening by talking to any one of them?

No. [a beat] There were only a few differences during the week itself, that was no issue.
