[ Masaomi has made a promise to himself today. It's the Monday after Valentines and he's pretty sure he hasn't been shifted yet. He's also gotten a pretty disappointing chocolate turnout on Valentines probably - anyone is free to correct me if your characters gave something. And really, something Davis once said still weighs on him... Not that he can do anything about it this late in the game but he's going to be doing something special today:

While he's working at the Convenience Store or later in the day when he's hanging out around the square - not only is he going to flirt with almost every girl he can see, which isn't unusual, he is going to try to score as many actual dates as he can. Asking people out. Because why not? It'll be fun and chances are the plans will be put awry in the next week or two anyway.

So ladies, come at him. Or dudes come ask what he's doing or maybe join in on him. yolo swag ]

[After a moment, she starts to turn a little red. It seemed like a reasonable thing to say when talking to Masaomi on the way out, but now that she's said it she feels kind of stupid for phrasing it like that.]

-- Never mind about that. But the only "past Valentines" I've had have been back home, not here.

[ And he reaches out now to hold up a green wrapped candy bar up in a closed fist to be his "thumb" - he has subtly picked one up to help with this joke ]

[ Okay, she giggles about the green thumb. ]

Are you sure it's not just that you can't miss success if you try a hundred times?

[ Her tone is light -- she's teasing. And then, trying to sound casual, she looks down and pretends to be occupied with smoothing out her dress. ]

Well...maybe there's someone else I'm hoping will pluck my....

[ She trails off and goes a lot more red. This one feels even stupider than her last. ]

Look, how do you talk like this with a straight face? I mean, I guess it's not exactly the sort of thing you say, but you use metaphors and the like a lot, or so it seems like.

[ As she starts to say that, he arches an eyebrow, making sure to keep a very significant expression set on her firmly. He sets the candy bar back on the shelf and when she finishes, he just chuckles ]

Well, I do have a talent for it. Still, you have someone you're interested in?

[ She's already pretty flushed, but she manages to find a little more red for her cheeks. She hasn't admitted her crush on Rei to anyone or her much more recent thoughts over the past couple of weeks of maybe wanting to do something about that crush, and she probably wouldn't have admitted any of it now if she'd been really thinking. But, embarrassed or not, she's not going to back down from this. She's going to look him straight in the eye and reply firmly: ]

Yes?! [ ...That wasn't firm. ] I mean, maybe? [ That wasn't firm at all.

She balls her hands up into fists and props them on her hips. She'll use belligerence to power through this. ]

I mean, yes, I'm interested. Of course I'm interested! I like her a lot, and she's beautiful, and she's a great person, and everything. But when I say maybe, I mean -- we're friends right now, and maybe that's enough? I mean, we've gone on dates before, anyway, since we met through that speed dating thing, without being anything other than friends, but I've started thinking that maybe -- maybe I want --

[ Okay, the downside to using belligerence to power through things is that she doesn't think about how much she's planning to share beforehand. She could have just said yes and let it go at that. Whoops. She forces herself to maintain eye contact, despite feeling like she's acting like a middle schooler talking about their first crush (not that she knows what a middle school is) rather than the woman of the world she likes to think she is. ]

Look, was this the kind of story you were looking for, or what?

[ Oh. Fen-chan is a lesbian...? Or maybe both ways, there's a thing for that, right? But the important part is that if she's serious enough to say something serious like that, she's off the market. He keeps eye contact with her too, letting her finish that off, but not trying to comment on it. Until she finishes, and then- ]

[ -A bright and sincere smile ]

It's close to one, anyway - as love goes, I do prefer the story to have a happy ending - but it sounds to me like your tale's one chapter short of that.

[ With a smile like that, she can't help but return it at least a little. She takes a deep breath and lets it out slowly as she settles her mood so that her response can be calmer this time. ]

I don't feel like I'm one chapter away from any kind of ending, but -- I guess you'll have to ask me later if that's the story you're looking for. [ A pause as she thinks about this. ] Or maybe I should tell you when you can ask in case it takes a while.

Oh, I can see an ending. [ And he raises an eyebrow, adopting a more teasing smile ] But sometimes the end is the end of the beginning. And ideally, that's the sort of ending that Fen-chan would experience. [ And one he'd love to hear about ]

[ Fenimore's smile grows a bit. ]

Okay, that much I might be hoping for soon. [ A brief pause, and then she continues a little more seriously. ] But not this month. I'm not going to do anything about it until Valentine's Day is a distant memory. It's not a good time to talk about relationships around here, if you want to be sure the answer's going to be the same in a week's time.

[ He snorts at that and shrugs because... really, she might be right. Still... ]

What, you don't believe in the risk of going big or going home?

[blessingone]

[ She laughs. ]

I might be all right with one or the other, but I'd rather not go big and then find out I have to go home a week later. Besides, it's only a few weeks.

[ Though with the sorts of things going on in those few weeks, it'll be a bit more of a wait than she expects. ]

Eeeeeh, that's such a realistic standpoint. Still, I can understand it. [ A bit more soberly, he says this, and then sighs as he looks up briefly at the ceiling, thinking back on Valentines pasts ]

You do get ahead of yourself in this month pretty often.

[ At first, she thinks he means her specifically and she wonders briefly what he's seen her doing. ]

I haven't been getting that far ahead of myself lately -- but you meant it generally, didn't you? [ Whoops. ]

You're right. Personally, I've been lucky enough to not really have anything happen in February for the past two years, but I can't really count on that.

And now I forgot if they remember old Shifts or not

Yeah, generally. I know I've had a short lived romance or two in the month of February, in years past. [ and one of then ended pretty scarily. So... ]
