Appointments Post ( II )

This post here is for personal conversations which should happen but one or both of us doesn't want to put up a new post/log and thus we will just thread it out here. This can be used to thread with Masaomi anytime and anywhere. This can either be in person (with action), or via the journal's call feature (voice and/or written).

Then thanks, Masaomi. Having some support means a lot. And I will do my best, even if I can't save this whole world. If I can even just make some small changes for the better... that'd be something, wouldn't it?

[His eyes still closed, he shakes his head and exhales, pointedly. He should look up at the sun again, but closing his eyes felt so good]

[Well, that was a nice moment. He leans his head back to open his eyes again and look up at the (through the fog) sun]

[ After finishing up with family present time and breakfast, Ikki shows up at the Dome in the pink party dress she put on when she woke up (because Holidays Require Dresses, right?), white veil and Soren in tow. She's bouncing with excitement, and although she didn't bring her new glider from Uncle Sokka this time, she definitely will be demonstrating it for Masaomi and everyone else she knows at one point or another. ]

[He says this with a little whistle, his arms folded behind his head. He's still not feeling his best or his most comfortable by a long shot, and there's nothing better to handle that with and being irreverent]

[His first thought is those elves from Christmas. He gives Masaomi a doubtful look - trying to imagine those kind of elves having the muscle strength for something like that is silly - but he's long grown used to this attitude coming from his friend.

I've had you reading up on the general ninjutsu skills. [Most of which will have to be assumed ooc, since there's not a lot of hard data on those besides what I'll make up/put in the chakra guide later.] Today we're going to start putting some of that knowledge to practice.

Yes, sir! I've done the required reading and everything! [With a little whistle at the end of it, still irreverently. In fact, he hum-whistles for a bit]

Good. [Shikamaru jumps up on the log, folding his legs and making himself comfortable.] Now practice that chain until you can do it in two seconds or less.

Acha... I swear, if I was meant for all this memorization I'd have taken calculus. [That said, he's trying to go about it. Not flawlessly, of course. In trying to speed up the repetition quicker he messes up the order and sometimes the signs entirely. He frowns when he does this, starting over]

[He nods in approval each time Masaomi starts over, deciding to only call him on it if he messes up the order without adjusting it.]

You have to get it into the routine, so that you may do it without thinking when it's most important. With Substitution, timing is everything. Worst case scenario, there can be a second's difference between life and death.

What is it with techniques needing this many signs?

[He whines this out as he takes a break to wiggle out his fingers. He was getting a cramp]

Heh. This is nothing. [He's seen as many handsigns as forty.] But it works out. The more often you use the technique, the more used to it you'll get. Most genin can use Substitution with just one hand sign not long after they graduate, and later none at all.

I've never quite gotten that, by the way- how can you reduce the sign number?

Think of it like a locked door. To open it, what you're doing now is picking it by moving each pin in the tumbler separately. But by staying in the room long enough, you'll find a key.

Broken down: it's just knowing how much chakra to use. Hand seals ensure you manipulate the exact amount needed to perform the technique, but over repeated use that can become innate.

Put into that context, aren't the hand signs psycho... [a brief trip up and he rolls his shoulders] that thing where you imagine things? [he shrugs now and nods]

Maybe I'm overthinking it, it doesn't suit me.

[Psychological. Shikamaru shakes his head.]

A little, perhaps. But the twelve hand signs are your units of measure when it comes to chakra. Maybe a cooking metaphor would've been more appropriate...

[Masaomi's better at that than he is. He's just used to reducing things to puzzles and games.]
